President's Welcome

The Junior League of Halifax (JLH) is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. This statement guides all aspects of our League activities. It is who we are and what we strive to do. Founded in 1933, the JLH has been serving the community for more than 75 years.  We are a member of the Association of Junior Leagues International Inc., which is comprised of 292 leagues spanning four countries.

Our approach to community service is strategic and relevant to our community; research and identify a need in our community, develop and implement a program to address that need, and hand-over the management of the program once it is well established.  Then we start the process anew.  Spanning the decades, a small sample of the past projects of the JLH include opening the first day-care in Halifax, the Halifax Children’s Library, Speech Therapy Clinic for Children, AHOY Magazine,  Telecare for Seniors, local Chapter of the Kid’s Help Phone, Backpacks for Kids, and many more. Our current area of focus is healthy families and addressing the issue of childhood obesity, where we are currently working in partnership with Supportive Housing for Young Mothers (SHYM) to present healthy cooking and nutrition workshops for teen moms.

Dedicated Junior League volunteers make it all happen. What sets us apart from other service organizations? The difference is our emphasis on learning. The Junior League offers its members extensive training in areas such as leadership and organizational development, community needs assessment, strategic planning, program development, volunteer relations, administration, communications, advocacy, and fundraising. The result: Junior Leagues know their community well, and know how to get things done. We assess problems, design creative solutions, motivate volunteers, provide opportunities for personal growth, and form new partnerships in the private and public sectors. Most importantly the Junior League lays the foundation for real, lasting change.

Members of the JLH are a diverse group of women who share an interest in serving their community, benefiting from leadership training and of course, having fun!  The JLH is recruiting new members; if you’d like to learn more about the benefits of membership in the JLH and how you can play an active role in your community, please contact us at info@juniorleagueofhalifax.org or by phone at (902) 429-9437.

Sincerely Yours,
