The Junior League of Halifax's Community Impact
Funds raised through our signature fundraiser, Homes for the Holidays, are used by the Junior League of Halifax to support projects in the community. There are many projects and initiatives the Junior League has undertaken in Halifax over our past 75-year history. Recent projects that have benefited from this funding are Backpacks for Kids (1999-2003), Laing House (2003-2007) and Kids in the Kitchen (2007).
After researching a variety of topics, the League turned to a new focus area: reducing the burden of childhood obesity in our community. There is an immense need for action on this issue and League volunteers are immersed in the focus through a variety of endeavours with community groups.
As part of our committment to healthy families, the Junior League of Halifax is engaged in a multi-year partnership with Supportive Housing for Young Mothers (SHYM) in Dartmouth. SHYM provides safe housing and programming for young moms who are homeless and at risk of becoming homeless. In our partnership with SHYM, the Junior League of Halifax provides interactive, fun and healthy cooking and nutrition workshops for teen moms. Cooking and creating delicious meals together, we share a message of health that has an impact on two generations at the same time!

In addition to our work with SHYM, Junior League volunteers develop and implement a variety of other initiatives focused on reduction of obesity among young people in our community. Members of the Junior League serve as advocates for healthy living and fitness, are engaged in learning more about nutrition and the factors that contribute to obesity in our environment, and develop links and partnerships with community organizations, participating in every way from hands-on volunteering to strategic planning at the regional level. As trained volunteers, League members develop the skills to acheive their goals and affect change in the community.
With our focus rooted in reducing childhood obesity, our members concentrate our volunteer efforts on the women, children and youth in our community. We will continue to build on the 75 year legacy of the Junior League of Halifax through service, fun, friendship and leadership development. Would you like to learn more?
